Julie and Skye Burket Build a Business to Love and Support the Community
Bend, Oregon is the kind of place people love so much they get creative to stay here. Similarly, others create businesses out of their passion for the adventurous lifestyle that Bend affords them. Two years ago, Julie Burket and her oldest daughter Skye, 22, were returning from a trip. As they approached their hometown of nearly three decades, Julie exclaimed, “Let’s just do Bend!” and their locally-focused lifestyle brand Livin’ Bend Clotheslines was born.
Skye was attending college at the time, but when she wasn’t nannying or studying, she and her friends were outside, camping, hiking, or snowboarding. The company’s products reflect these interests. The pair started with a few casual clothing items, adorning hoodies, t-shirts and beanies with amusing, tongue-in-cheek phrases: “Ski the Bumps,” “Shred Rip Soar,” “In Search of Trailhead,” “Smith Rocks!” or “Beer, Better to Have More Than Enough.” The owners of five dogs between their family of six, Julie and Skye wanted to feature some pooch-friendly products. A t-shirt saying, “Bend, Where Every Dog Is a Top Dog,” honors their beloved Ria, a teacup Chihuahua.
Another goal of their family-run business is to give back. The Burkets donate 25 percent of net sales of all dog-related products to Family Access Network (FAN) to help local children obtain items necessary for everyday success at school. Other products honor the LGTBQ community or support education around Parkinson’s Disease. Julie says, “The best part about Livin’ Bend is learning, succeeding and giving back with my amazing daughter. Skye has many talents and is truly the most sensible person I’ve ever known. I cherish every minute of the process.” LivinBendClotheslines.com
